311
Nebraska Rock Band Known for Genre-Blending Reggae, Hip-Hop, and Alternative Rock
About 311
311, formed in 1988, is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, known for their unmistakable fusion of rock, reggae, hip-hop, funk, and alternative that has made them one of the most enduring and touring-heavy acts of their generation. The lineup — Nick Hexum (lead vocals, guitar), SA Martinez (vocals, turntables), Tim Mahoney (lead guitar), Aaron "P-Nut" Wills (bass), and Chad Sexton (drums) — has remained intact for more than three decades, a rarity in modern rock. The band's name comes from the Omaha police code for indecent exposure, a nod to an early incident when a friend was arrested for skinny-dipping.
After relocating to Los Angeles and releasing independent albums Music (1993) and Grassroots (1994), their commercial breakthrough came with the self-titled 311 (1995), which went triple platinum and produced the hits "Down" and "All Mixed Up," both reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and establishing the band as a mainstream rock force.
