American Rock Band, Numerous Gold and Platinum Album Awards
About 38 Special
38 Special, formed in 1974, is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. Known for blending Southern rock with arena-ready hooks, they carved out a signature sound that found massive success in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Founded by Donnie Van Zant (vocals) and Don Barnes (guitar/vocals), the group’s classic lineup also included Jeff Carlisi (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), and Steve Brookins and Jack Grondin (drums). The band’s name came from an incident involving a .38 caliber revolver and a locked rehearsal space—cementing their gritty name. Their breakthrough album, “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys” (1981), went platinum with hits like “Hold On Loosely” and “Fantasy Girl,” both rock radio staples. The follow-up, “Special Forces” (1982), featured “Caught Up in You,” which hit number one on Billboard’s Rock Tracks chart. Albums like “Tour de Force” (1983) and “Strength in Numbers” (1986) followed, delivering a streak of Top 40 singles and securing their place in rock history. With over 20 million albums sold and a string of Gold and Platinum certifications, 38 Special remains a high-energy live act and a fan favorite at festivals, casinos, and major corporate events.
