Afroman, born Joseph Edgar Foreman on July 28, 1974, is an American hip-hop artist known for his comedic storytelling and laid-back flow. Hailing from Palmdale, California, his musical journey began in middle school when he sold homemade mixtapes—including a rap about his eighth-grade teacher—and honed his craft playing drums and guitar in church. After dropping his debut album My Fro‑losophy in 1998, he moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. There he connected with drummer Jody Stallone, bassist/keyboardist Daryl Havard, and producer Tim Ramenofsky. In 2000, he released Because I Got High on T‑Bones Records, and the title track became a global hit—thanks in part to exposure on Napster and The Howard Stern Show. The song topped charts in the UK and New Zealand, sold over half a million copies, and earned Afroman a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance in 2002. He followed with Crazy Rap, another international hit from Sell Your Dope and The Good Times (2001). Throughout the 2000s and beyond, Afroman released a prolific body of work—including Drunk ‘n’ High, A Colt 45 Christmas, and Waiting to Inhale—building a devoted fanbase with his independently released albums and comedic flair.
