Arrested Development emerged from Atlanta's hip-hop scene in 1988 as one of the most influential and socially-conscious groups in rap history, offering a positive, Afrocentric, and spiritually-grounded alternative to the gangsta rap that dominated the era. Founded by rapper Speech (Todd Thomas) and DJ Headliner (Timothy Barnwell), the group grew into a rotating collective incorporating vocalists, dancers, and instrumentalists — including Aerle Taree, Montsho Eshe, and Rasa Don — whose live-band-driven sound and message-forward lyrics helped redefine what mainstream hip-hop could be.

Their breakthrough came with their debut studio album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... (1992) — whose title referenced how long it took them to get signed — which went four-times platinum in the U.S. and produced a string of era-defining hits including "Tennessee," "People Everyday," "Mr. Wendal," and "Revolution." At the 1993 Grammy Awards, they won Best New Artist AND Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Tennessee," becoming the first hip-hop act to ever win Best New Artist. They were also named Rolling Stone's Band of the Year.
