Benga
British Dubstep Pioneer and Founding Force of the UK Dubstep Movement
About Benga
Benga is widely regarded as one of the founding architects of dubstep — a British DJ and producer whose pioneering work in South London's Croydon scene in the early 2000s helped invent one of the most influential electronic genres of the 21st century. Born Adegbenga Adejumo in Croydon, London, in 1986, Benga began producing at the age of 13 and quickly became one of the youngest and most gifted figures at the center of the Big Apple Records and FWD>> club community — the same generational scene that produced Skream, Digital Mystikz, Coki, and Hatcha, and that gave the world dubstep as a genre.
His breakthrough came with a wave of foundational productions that helped define the sound of early dubstep, culminating in his landmark studio album Diary of an Afro Warrior (2008). The album included the genre-defining anthem "Night," his collaboration with Coki, which became one of the most iconic dubstep tracks ever released and remains a cornerstone of every dubstep DJ's arsenal to this day. The record cemented Benga as one of the leading creative forces of the movement and one of the artists most responsible for taking dubstep from the London underground to a global audience.
