Dwight Yoakam
Grammy-Winning Country Icon Known for Bakersfield Sound Revival
About Dwight Yoakam
Dwight Yoakam, whose career began in the mid-1980s, is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and filmmaker who reintroduced the raw energy of the Bakersfield sound to mainstream country music. Born in Pikeville, Kentucky on October 23, 1956, and raised in Ohio and California, he built a signature style rooted in honky-tonk, rockabilly and traditional country—marked by his distinctive tenor vocal delivery.
His debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. (1986), became a breakthrough hit, followed by Hillbilly Deluxe and Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room, all reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. He earned two Grammy Awards for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Collaboration, as well as an Academy of Country Music award. He also earned major hits including “Streets of Bakersfield” (a duet with Buck Owens) and “I Sang Dixie,” plus twelve additional top-ten singles.
