Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in 1981 in the Southall district of West London, Jay Sean is a British-Indian singer, songwriter, and producer whose fusion of R&B, pop, and hip-hop made him the first British-Indian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 and one of the most successful South Asian pop stars in Western music history. Raised in a Punjabi Sikh family, he began writing songs as a teenager while briefly studying medicine before turning fully to music in the early 2000s.

His breakthrough came with his debut studio album Me Against Myself (2004) on Virgin Records, powered by the singles "Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal)" and "Eyes On You," which established him as one of the UK's most exciting new pop-R&B voices. After parting ways with Virgin, he launched his own imprint, 2Point9 Records, and released My Own Way (2008), which produced the top-10 UK hit "Ride It."
