LL Cool J
Grammy-Winning Rapper and Hip-Hop Pioneer with Iconic Career
About LL Cool J
LL Cool J is a Grammy-winning rapper and hip-hop pioneer whose iconic career has helped shape the sound, image, and culture of rap for over three decades. Known for his smooth delivery, razor-sharp flow, and larger-than-life charisma, he emerged in the mid-1980s as one of the genre’s first true superstars—bridging the gap between streetwise lyricism and mainstream appeal.
Born James Todd Smith in Queens, New York, LL Cool J signed with the legendary Def Jam label as a teenager and released his debut album Radio in 1985. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album introduced a minimalist, hard-hitting style that was both aggressive and accessible, with hits like “Rock the Bells” and “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” setting a new standard for MCs. His follow-up, Bigger and Deffer (1987), included the timeless hit “I Need Love,” one of the first rap ballads to achieve mainstream success—cementing his versatility and cross-genre appeal.
