Walk Off the Earth
Viral Indie Pop Band Known for Creative Covers and Multi-Instrumental Talent
About Walk Off the Earth
Walk Off the Earth turned a single viral video into a global career, building one of the most-watched music channels on YouTube with their inventive multi-instrumental performances. Formed in Burlington, Ontario, in 2006 by singer-guitarist Gianni "Luminati" Nicassio, the Canadian indie-pop band grew into a tight-knit collective featuring vocalist Sarah Blackwood, drummer Joel Cassady, and the late keyboardist Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor, known for their playful arrangements and unconventional instrumentation.
The band's breakthrough arrived in January 2012 with a one-take cover of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," performed by five members sharing a single guitar. The video exploded online, amassing more than 190 million YouTube views and earning the group a deal with Columbia Records virtually overnight, transforming them from a hardworking indie act into a worldwide sensation.
