Mary J. Blige
Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Known for Powerful Vocals and R&B Classics
About Mary J. Blige
Mary J. Blige, the nine-time Grammy-winning Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress whose work pioneered the fusion of soul vocals and hip-hop production that has defined modern R&B for three decades. Born in the Bronx in 1971 and raised in Yonkers, she was discovered after recording an a cappella version of Anita Baker's "Caught Up in the Rapture" at a shopping-mall karaoke booth, leading to a teenage signing with Andre Harrell's Uptown Records.
Her debut album, What's the 411? (1992) was certified triple platinum and launched the breakout singles "Real Love" and "You Remind Me," establishing her signature blend of streetwise hip-hop attitude and church-rooted vocals. The follow-up, My Life (1994), widely regarded as one of the greatest R&B albums ever recorded, deepened her reputation and sold more than three million copies in the United States.
