About Tower of Power
The American funk and soul band, Tower of Power, emerged from Oakland, California in 1968 to become known for their powerful rhythm section, legendary horn section and high-energy live performances. Emilio Castillo and Stephen “Doc” Kupka established the group in 1968 to create a distinctive musical style that blended soul, funk, jazz and R&B elements.
Bump City (1972) brought the group their first success through “You’re Still a Young Man” and Tower of Power (1973) produced hits such as “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?”
